A unique area

Visit one or several of the nature reserves all around the area, where you can discover a great diversity of flora and fauna. Whether hiking or cycling, there is plenty to appreciate. The entire area belongs to the Zwin region: a unique area where the beach and the polders meet right on the border of Flanders and the Netherlands.

These areas were created during the last century, when the mouth of Zwin silted up and parts of the Braekman (now a recreational area near Waterland-Oudeman) flooded. Then a period of land reclamation followed and only the creeks remained as a reminder of the floods of the past.

These are some of the most beautiful creeks worth a visit

Enjoy Het Waterland

“Het Waterland”

“Het Waterland” is the name of the beautiful local region full of flora and fauna around the Huisje Nummer tien. It is also the name of our local mid-size family farm focused on sustainably growing and delivering high quality local produce directly to the end customer.

The farm is located just 1.5 km away from the house and is managed by our brother Tim, who took over the farm business from the family in April 2021.
The farm and the region “Het Waterland” are at the heart of our vacation offering at Huisje Nummer Tien as well as Tafel Twaalf (more details can be found under “local dining”).

Het Waterland

We as a family have joined forces and a created a common vision to:

Grow high quality local produce and establish local “fair” trade for everyone

Reduce the distance between a producer and a consumer to no or limited intermediaries

Offer full transparency to consumers about the origin, treatments and CO2 footprint of the produce

Connect with the nature while being introduced to the modern agriculture

Share our passion and concepts with other entrepreneurs and consumers

The opportunities

The opportunities

When staying at Nummer Tien we will be happy the share more information about Het Waterland and our passion during your stay. You will also have the opportunity to order meat, barbecue packages or other produce from the farm during your stay.

When feasible, Tim is happy to share with you his passion as well and show around the farm.

Enjoy the cities

Besides the wonderful nature and charming neighboring villages, there are plenty of beautiful cities that are worth discovering in a daytrip. Some of our favourites include:

Sluis

Sluis

Sluis is probably the most Flemish town of the Netherlands. It is was a former harbour city, but has long been cut off from the sea.

The original city, its town gates, the quay and Belfort are well preserved and are worth a visit. Sluis is also very popular for its tearooms and (Sunday!) shopping opportunities. Enjoy a relaxing stroll around the town and try a coffee in one of the bars along the quay.

Bruges

Bruges

Bruges (Brugge) is called the Venice of the North and is a truly gorgeous city. It has been a Unesco World Heritage Site since 1998 and has been meticulously cared for. The medieval buildings, cobbled streets and mysterious canals create a captivating atmosphere, making it difficult not to fall in love with Bruges at the first sight.

Spend a full day discovering the secrets of Bruges and experience this ambiance for yourself. Don’t forget to enjoy one of the great local beers, warm waffles or artisan chocolates on a sunny terrace.

Antwep

Antwerp

Antwerp is famous for two things: diamonds and designer clothes. It doesn’t have the same charm as Ghent or Bruges, but is definitely worth a visit to see the famous tourist locations or if you want to go shopping.

Antwerp’s diamond tradition goes back all the way to the 15th century and the diamond district is located close to the central train station. All kinds of jewelry is available for purchase.

Middelburg

Middelburg

Middelburg is a quaint little town on the other side of the Schelde river.

On a bike trip to the Netherlands, it could be a perfect stop for some historic sightseeing and visiting the local cafes and bars for a refreshment.

Ghent

Ghent

Ghent (Gent) has always been our personal favorite and when you visit Belgium it’s an absolute must to see! Either by day or at night, Ghent’s character is what makes it one of the most surprising and striking cities in the world.

Whether one is up for enjoying the medieval architecture, relaxing on a boat trip on the city canals, or indulging in gastronomic pleasures – Ghent has all of that and so much more to offer. The city also hosts several big events in summertime so be sure to check them out, if you are around!

Belgian cuisine

Everyone knows and loves Belgian waffles, Belgian chocolate or French fries (unequivocally Belgian!). Belgian cuisine goes far beyond that and has undeservedly been forgotten from the listings of the must taste or most delicious world cuisines.

We have so many more culinary tips for Meetjesland, Flanders or the nearby Dutch towns and cities, and we cannot wait to share them with you when you arrive for the stay at Huisje Nummer tien!

Tafel Twaalf

Tafel Twaalf

My family, having a long farming tradition, has always paid significant attention to food. In 2020, this has evolved into a new passion: offering our home grown or raised products to a wider public.

Together with her partner Jonas, my sister Fien is busy renovating what’s soon to become the gastronomic gem of Waterland-Oudeman – their own restaurant Tafel Twaalf. But already now select take-away dates as well as the grill Polderbox with the meat coming from my brother’s farm Het Waterland are available to try.

Enjoy the activities

The region offers plenty of opportunities for people who want to enjoy other leisure activities such as:

Biking and hiking

Biking and hiking

The house is situated in the middle of a great bike network. You will have the opportunity to enjoy lovely bike rides through the “Polders”, along the astonishing creeks or North Sea. In the house we offer plenty of bike- and hiking maps to help you on your discovery tour through the area.

Furthermore, the house is a great starting point for a hiking trip during which you will discover the endless nature this peaceful region has to offer. We will be happy to assist you with the planning of your own trip at your arrival in the house !

Fun for kids

Fun for kids

Our garden is enclosed and so a great and safe place for your kids to enjoy some time outdoors. You will be able to supervise your kids while enjoying the lovely view on the Polders from our terrace. In the house you will find as well some outdoor toys for your kids. The village has also its own playground which is situated just 100 meters away from the house. In addition, a more adventurous playground can be found at the “De Boerekreek”; just 3 kilometers away from the house.

However if your kids are really up for an adventurous afternoon, we recommend you to go to “Groede Podium”, a surprisingly green playground and information park in the Groede polders and situated immediately behind the coastline. Children won’t get enough of it! Here you will find playing cubes, climbing towers, a labyrinth to get lost in and a water playground to splash around during hot days.
